Researchers with the Department of Energy have concluded that the average house has duct leakage ranging from 27% to 40%.  Our own testing mirrors the findings of Austin Energy.  Duct leakage does not discriminate, it occurs in NEWER homes (less than 5 years old) and older homes.  In fact, one of the tightest duct systems we ever tested was a 26 year old home in South Austin.  This particular house had a duct leakage percentage of 7.3%!  
                                                                                                                                                                                            
Our testing involves using a Duct Blaster to depressurize your duct system.  We are then able to determine your overall leakage rate by CFM (cubic feet per minute).  Our goal during our work scope is to get your duct leakage to less than 10%.  In most cases, we are able to achieve total duct loss in the 7-8% range after our work.   We also use a Blower Door  to test your entire thermal boundary.  The Blower Door simulates a 20 mph wind on the outside of the thermal boundary and will show us exactly how much air is infiltrating and/or escaping from your building.  After our work, we are able to achieve Natural Air Changes per Hour (ACHn) in the .35 to .45 range.  This is the range which is optimum for health and energy efficiency as determined by AUSTIN ENERGY.

What We Do Perform Duct Blaster and Blower Door tests for test-in record. Seal all plumbing penetrations (like the picture at left) Seal all duct connections to the triangles and boots. Seal all return plenums (keeps unconditioned air OUT) Seal supply plenums (keeps conditioned air IN) Add additional weatherstripping to exterior doors. Seal and insulate the attic hatch/stairbox in conditioned area. Add combustion air if needed. Seal all registers. Seal all furnaces. Perform Duct Blaster and Blower Door for test-out record.
